Passenger Motor Vehicle

The automotive manufacturing sector accounts for around 6 per cent of manufacturing industry value added and provides employment for approximately 60,000 people. Most of this employment is in Victoria and South Australia , although there are significant enterprises producing components in some other states.

The Australian vehicle market is small, mature and diverse. It is supplied by local assemblers and specialist vehicle importers – in all, the market is shared between about 40 vehicle makes featuring around 250 models. There are four passenger motor vehicle (PMV) assemblers in Australia – Ford, Holden, Mitsubishi and Toyota .

Total domestic vehicle sales were more than 900,000 in 2003 of which around two-thirds were Passenger Motor Vehicles. Imports account for 60% of total PMV sales. Around three-quarters of the imported PMV’s are in the light/small vehicle category where there are no locally produced counterparts. In contrast, the domestic assemblers capture around 97% of the large PMV segment.

The four vehicle assemblers are supported by a domestic supply chain – which has a major bearing on the competitiveness of the automotive sector as a whole – comprising around 200 component producers, service providers and toolers.
