Diesel Fuel Specialist Profile

Since I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be involved in the automotive industry. I knew that’s what I wanted to do, and I’ve always aimed towards my goal. I decided to leave school at the end of year 10. I knew there was a bit of a current skills shortage in the automotive industry, so I saw this as a good opportunity to enter the industry.

I got a lot of advice from friends and family, and everyone was really positive about entering the industry, especially because of the high demand in jobs at the moment. I knew a trade such as a Diesel Fuel Specialist would provide me with some life long skills that would remain useful for the rest of my life, plus the money for top-end tradesmen wasn’t too bad either.

The work I do

Usually I am involved in a variety of tasks, depending on the client. Basically, this job involves carrying out diagnostic procedures, as well as the overhaul and repair of diesel fuel systems and components. I also am involved in the servicing of diesel fuel injection systems and the service and repair of emission control and engine forced induction systems.

I also look at carrying out minor repairs to electrical circuits and the service and repair of electronic engine management systems. I usually end up working around 38 hours a week, plus any overtime if required.

My workplace

The workplace is reasonable in terms of set-up. There is a fair degree of space, and everything is well set out. I am always able to find exactly what I need.

One of the great aspects of the workplace is that everyone gets along really well. It is always a good laugh turning up to work each day, everyone is just good entertainment.

Education and training

I originally began working with drips and dry shafts in a truck manufacturers workshop. I heard about this position through an employment agency and I knew this was a pretty good opportunity, and was more the field I wanted to be working in.

So I had an interview, and next thing I knew I was working here. That was almost 4 years ago, and I have since completed my Certificate III in Automotive (Mechanic – Diesel Fuel Specialist).

Why I love this industry…

I love a bit of a challenge, and I have always been interested in cars since I was young, so I saw this trade as a good fit. I grew up around cars and trucks; you could almost say I have diesel in my veins. So I wouldn’t change my situation because I love what I do, and I get a real buzz out of doing things well!

I’ve never been the type of person who could sit behind a desk all day – I’ve got to be out doing something with my hands. I love the atmosphere and I love the challenge. I cannot see it changing because I still get a buzz out of coming to work every day because I know I am going to be learning something new – opportunities as good as this are very rare!

ATA would like to thank B.J. Diesel Fuel Injection Service for their assistance.
