Radiator Repairer Profile

My Dad was a qualified radiator repairer by trade. Ever since I was a young kid I have surrounded myself in a workshop environment. I guess it was just a natural progression to follow in my father’s footsteps. After I completed year 12, I came into the industry and began an apprenticeship working within the family business.

We worked together for over ten years, but then business really took off and we knew our only option was to open another shop. We decided to purchase another place, and I was lucky enough to take on the position as Manager. I guess I owe a lot to this good fortune, as that was twenty-two years ago, and since then I’ve never looked back; I’m very happy with where I am now. It’s just good fun coming to work each day, knowing my craft and getting things done with confidence. Besides, doesn’t every kid grow up with a dream of tweaking with cars and engines all day? I know I did!

The work I do

As a radiator repairer, I look at applying diagnostic procedures to determine symptoms and faults, as well as the repair and servicing of cooling systems and associated components. The position also entails carrying out radiator repairs for light/heavy vehicles, mobile plant, motorcycle, marine and outdoor power equipment. I also look at doing a bit of welding, soldering, thermal cutting and heating procedures.

Also as Manager of the shop, I am involved in all managerial operations and quality control procedures.

My workplace

The workshop is excellent for what we need. One of the great aspects is that we are always using the latest technology. Some of the tools we use look like they would cost a heap. So this builds a bit of enthusiasm amongst the group, as everyone knows that if you work hard and have a bit of talent, then it won’t be long before you are using the best equipment and getting detailed product training.

The atmosphere is always pretty good and upbeat; we never seem to have any problems amongst the crew. I have always found that an enjoyable workplace is always more productive. If all the guys enjoy coming to work, rather than keeping quiet, we always get a better response and better workmanship.

Education and training

I completed my HSC, as it was known back in the old days. Following that, I acquired most of my learning and education on the job. This led to the completion of my Certificate II in Automotive (Mechanical – Radiator Repair).

More recently though, I have completed a number of TAFE and other training courses relating to radiator repairing, mechanical servicing and aftermarket care. I am always coming across more opportunities to learn about my craft.

Why I love this industry…

There is a definite satisfaction of knowing you have done a job properly and you know when the customer comes back, they are happy with your work. I have been involved in this business for over 20 years and have developed some excellent relationships with customers. A lot of people I have come across on the retail side of things have become more friends than just customers.

A few things need to be changed regarding the perception of the radiator game. It is a completely different situation nowadays. A lot of diagnostic work requires a knack for problem solving. Also there is definitely a lot of enthusiasm growing in this sector given that technological development and occupational health and safety requirements have demanded that the workplace remains clean and precise. I guess this all adds to the growing respectability of the industry. But I’m having a great time here and plan to continue enjoying my job.

ATA would like to thank Diamond Valley Radiators for their assistance.
